The trip starts with snorkeling in the second biggest coral reef of the world. Besides the beautiful corals you can also see tiny sharks, rays and several different types of colourful fishes. You then proceed to the actual island. It isn't inhabited thus in it's original state. This contributes to a marvelous experience combined with a delicious BBQ, which is prepared by the staff. The staff creates a humorous and relaxing atmosphere and surprises with Tequila-dances and a considerable amount of knowledge. The tour ends with a short visit on Isla Mujeres. It is the perfect spot to end the day with ice-cream and mexican vibes. PS: The service was excellent. One is being asked every 10 minutes after something to drink.
We started the day being picked up in an air-conditioned van and delivered to the port. There was a small selection of free breakfast items there, such as fruit, croissants, and juice. Be aware that you will have to pay 10 cash per person or the equivalent in pesos at the port that is not included in your tour package price. After we boarded the boat and got under way, the crew did introductions and we all signed a log so that we could visit Isla Contoy. They did announcements in English, Spanish, French, and Italian. We were given snorkeling instructions as we cruised out to the reef. Only strong swimmers were allowed to swim out to the reef because it is quite a distance and the currents are strong. However, for the rest of us we were able to swim and snorkel around the boat and see plenty of fish. Everyone was required to wear a life jacket around their waist. Back on the boat, we took the boat trip to Isla Contoy which I believe was about 45 minutes. The crew offered us lots of alcoholic beverages as well as water and soda. If you like to drink, there was a lot of alcohol available throughout the trip. Isla Contoy was unbelievably gorgeous and they limit the number of people allowed on the island. There were only about 50 of us there. We had about an hour and a half to swim or explore the island before lunch. I brought my own mask and snorkel with me and saw several barracuda and a sting ray. The water was so clear you could also see the fish from shore or on the pier. Lunch was fantastic and included fish, chicken, and yummy sides. It was one of our favorite meals on vacation. After lunch, you could either take a guided tour or return to the beach to swim. There were also plenty of palm trees if you preferred a nap in the shade. The guide, Alexis, was very knowledgeable about the island and the wildlife there. He was able to answer all of our questions and kept the tour interesting. I think we were on the island for about 4 hours. We chose to change into regular clothes before we left. There is no water on the island, but the crew washed our feet off as we got back on the boat. We then took another 45 minute boat ride to the island of Isla Mujeres. I wasn't too excited about that, but if you are looking for a safe place to shop other given the travel warnings, then this is your opportunity. We spent an hour there, which gave us time to walk around a bit and get some ice cream. The boat trip back to Cancun was a great time as the crew dressed in costumes and danced to music the whole way. They were amazing and we decided to tip them 10 from each of us because they worked so hard. I would definitely recommend this tour!
The crew of the ship was a hoot and just great with there talent and attention. The nature guides were also quite good. The snorkeling bit was much too chaotic and rushed for me and I chose not to participate. Contoy Island was beautiful in all ways. The contrast of Isla Mujeres was stark to say the least.
The crew were very helpful, safety conscious and friendly. Food was good. Contoy island was very interesting with a great opportunity to swim and sunbake on the pristine beach. The boat and trip to the island were peaceful. My only gripe is that the snorkeling was far too rushed, detracting from the enjoyment of the reef. There was precious little time to just chill and float in the water. The crew sang and danced most of the way back to Cancun.
This outing was one of the highlights of our visit to Cancun, offering something for everyone. The boat rides over the azure waters were lovely; the wildlife tour on the island was fascinating and conducted by a highly knowledgeable guide; the meal was fantastic; and the visit to Isla Mujeres was interesting. The biggest surprise was the amazing crew who provided entertainment of a slightly wacky but super-fun sort on the return voyage. Lots of singing and silliness by anyone who wanted to participate (but no worries, although a "party atmosphere" there was no obnoxious behaviour). In fact, the only reason we did not give this trip the highest rating was due to our disappointment in the snorkeling portion. As experienced snorkelers, we felt rushed and herded from one spot to another, and so did not see anything of interest. That said, we will definitely take this outing once again if we are able to return to Cancun!
